How exactly does one recite the Quran- does it have to be in Arabic or in English? Is it just reading it aloud?

For some reason I'm confused on this- I know God commands us to recite his holy words but is it ok to just read my English translation aloud or do I need to do it in Arabic? I know my ultimate goal will be to one day learn the Quran in arabic but for now...How exactly does one recite the Quran- does it have to be in Arabic or in English? Is it just reading it aloud?
Recitation of Quran is in Arabic only, you may read English translation just to understand,

Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word???? This is a beautiful story please do read and pass this to ur beloveds. Jazak Allah.

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, 'Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?'

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, 'Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.'

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, 'You'll have to move a little faster next time,' and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, 'I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough,' and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, 'See Grandpa, it's useless!'

'So you think it is useless?' The old man said, 'Look at the basket.'

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

'Son, that's what happens when you read the Qur'an. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives.'
Yes the Qur'an is recited in Arabic, following the rules of Tajweed. Reciting the Qur'an is an act of worship, and you are rewarded for it even if you don't understand its meanings. You don't have to read the English translation aloud.

@Life Guru

You say there is nothing in the Qur'an that restricts its recitation to Arabic. On the contrary, the word "Qur'an" itself means recitation, and Allah(swt) tells us multiple times that the Qur'an is in Arabic.

12:2

Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand. (2)

26:193-195

The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (193) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - (194) In a clear Arabic language. (195)

39:28

[It is] an Arabic Qur'an, without any deviance that they might become righteous. (28)How exactly does one recite the Quran- does it have to be in Arabic or in English? Is it just reading it aloud?
Qur'an means recitation...and one can earn rewards from reciting the Qur'an in Arabic letter by letter...reading the Qur'an in your own language hopefully also earns the blessings of Allah with the sincere intention to learn and understand what He wants from us, so we can act upon it accordingly and at the same time share the knowledge we learn.
You have to recite the Quran in a language you understand best, Quran is a guide and must be understood to be of any value to the individual doing the recitation. Beside there is nothing in the Quran that restrict its recitation to Arabic. Merely chanting it is neither here nor there.

You are welcome to read my posts on the subject on my blog :)How exactly does one recite the Quran- does it have to be in Arabic or in English? Is it just reading it aloud?
I think Allah will understand if u say it in english if that is the only way u know it. But there are qurans that have arabic in english lets so that u can say it in arabic
it's ok if it's english, allah doesnt look (listen) at the language, but it's better in arabic
